November 5 Chapter Meeting: Eileen Haavik McIntire

Saturday, November 5, 2016, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Eileen’s two historical novels, Shadow of the Rock and In Rembrandt’s Shadow, involved extensive research and travel. Shadow of the Rock focused on a story often mentioned in Florida history books about the grandmother of David Levy Yulee, Florida’s first senator. She was captured by Barbary pirates and sold to the vizier of Morocco, finally escaping to Gibraltar. In Rembrandt’s Shadow is the second in the series and follows a Rembrandt painting through the centuries while a present-day couple seek its rightful owner.

Intrigued by the plight of a young woman captured by pirates, Eileen conducted extensive research to find out more with the view to turning the story into a novel.

How would members of the Montgomery County Chapter conduct such a search? Through an interactive process, Eileen will lead a discussion of the creativity involved in answering questions of character, setting, and plot in an historical context. She will draw on the problem-solving capacity of the participants and then describe steps she took in finding out the details for her own historical novels.  These steps began with the obvious: online and library searches, continue with contacting authorities, and then on to travel to important sites in the novel. The last question for participants will be how to incorporate all the accumulated information into a novel. The program will conclude with cautions for writers.
